SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TODAY'S VENICE MARCHING BAND:
THERE ARE ONLY 13 MEMBERS AND EVERY ONE OF THEM IS A VOLUNTEER!
That's right... only thirteen band members (eight in the photo below) and their emergency fill-in advisor, Ms. Kornbeck (the current choir teacher) and EVERY ONE OF THEM IS A VOLUNTEER because in the fall of 2011, Venice High dropped band class and also cut it's only full-time music position on campus to part-time. That means the students receive NO SCHOOL CREDIT for practicing or playing at football games and pep rallies.
A few years ago there were only a handful of musicians in the band. Two years ago they had ten, last year eleven and now there are at thirteen. For the last two years, the former band teacher refused to play the fight song or the Alma Mater. This current, all-volunteer band is made up of mostly freshmen who just recently began playing instruments as part of an after school program at the Boys and Girls Club of Venice.
THESE FOURTEEN PEOPLE ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO KEEP VENICE MUSICAL TRADITIONS ALIVE AND THEY NEED YOUR HELP (they need: sheet music, volunteers to sort the music they do have and anyone who can scann music using Sibelius software). Please call Ms. Kornbeck - (714) 475-4268 or email the VHSAA.
